Why Wet Cleaning?
It's a much cleaner and safer alternative to “Dry Cleaning”. Dry cleaners have been using Petrochemicals to clean for decades, but the truth is, there are some serious problems with them. PERC or Perchloroethylene, the most widely used Petrochemical, is a pretty nasty substance. It’s been called a “likely carcinogen” (likely causes cancer) by the United States EPA, and is also considered a neurotoxin. It’s also a VOC (Volatile Organic Compound), meaning it’s an air pollutant. The next most widely used chemicals are called “Hydrocarbons”. While slightly better than PERC, these are still Petrochemicals, still neurotoxins, and still VOC’s.
Furthermore, both PERC and Hydrocarbon create Hazardous Waste! These chemicals are so dangerous that they cannot be legally disposed of like any other substance. Most dry cleaners must hire Hazardous Waste Haulers to come collect the hazardous waste materials they create during the cleaning process.
Over the last decade or so, as Best Care Cleaners in Evanston became aware of the hazards of using PERC and other petro-chemicals, we began looking for newer, more environmentally-friendly solutions. We searched for specialized equipment to aid in the finishing of wet-cleaned garments, and special softeners and additives have been created specifically for the wet-cleaning process. It is now totally safe to clean virtually any garment using the wet cleaning process! Best Care Cleaners is living up to its name to “best care” for our clients’ garments and advocating everyone to experience the greener way to clean.
